Three years ago, if you'd asked us what 2024 would look like, attending Chicago’s premier birth and baby conference wouldn’t have been on our radar. But after a whirlwind year, we found ourselves changing travel plans at the last minute to rush back to Chicago, baby in tow, to join expecting parents, birth educators, local vendors, and postpartum support professionals at Baby in Bloom on September 29th.
Baby in Bloom was Chicago's first birth and baby conference, curated and hosted by Chicago Family Doulas—the agency we turned to for birth education and doula support during our pregnancy earlier this year. From our first encounter with Chicago Family Doulas, the difference in professionalism, operations, and content was clear compared to other birth-related organizations we’d interacted with across 15 countries and two states. Their personalized care—from the initial phone call to the follow-up from Founder & CEO Annamarie Rodney just hours after our baby was born—was exceptional. Once Matthew and I were a little more settled into parenthood, we knew we had to not only thank them, but also meet the brains behind this outstanding operation.
When we met Anna, it was obvious she wasn’t just a dreamer, but a doer. She began her career as a special education teacher, transitioned into being a doula, and then took elements from both experiences to build Chicago Family Doulas. After working with her as clients, mentees, and now partners, it’s clear she’s building a support network for Chicagoland families that will stand the test of time. Anna’s ability to re-tool, build genuine relationships, and pivot swiftly is central to Baby in Bloom's success. This event is just the beginning of what I believe will become a trusted, long-lasting perinatal support community in Chicago.
Baby in Bloom was far from a typical conference. It wasn’t corporate, product-driven, or overwhelmed by sponsorships. Instead, it was a thoughtfully curated gathering of local providers and resources, all dedicated to educating and empowering expecting parents throughout their pregnancy journey—from prenatal care to postpartum support. Held at The Arbory, a hidden gem nestled between car repair shops and residences on Grand Ave., Baby in Bloom featured educational sessions on everything from establishing healthy sleep habits to maintaining mental health. The day also offered lighthearted moments like a maternity wear fashion show and mini maternity photoshoots. With only 12 vendors, there was ample time for genuine conversation and connection between community partners and parents eager to learn about resources like partner support during pregnancy and infant massage. And of course, the fully catered event was a hit with everyone—especially the expecting moms.
Mama prefers to be behind the camera ;)
As a new mom balancing motherhood, business, health, and advocacy for shared household responsibilities with my husband, Baby in Bloom offered more than just learning opportunities. It gave me a chance to connect, build relationships, and establish a sense of community with fellow parents walking a similar path. Together, we’re not just raising babies—we're building a village.
